Me FUKUDA était meilleur en pratique qu'en forme. Sa méthode d'enseignement consistait à apprendre la technique par la pratique sans attacher d'importance à la forme. Il expliquait que très succintement les mouvements et ses élèves s'entrainaient sans explications théoriques.

Jigoro n'y prêtait pas attention. Ce qui l'ennuyait bien plus, c'était son supérieur qui allait au même dojo et qui s'appelait Kenkichi FUKUSHIMA. Jigoro ne pesait que 50 kgs environ. Il était toujours à sa merci et ne trouvait aucun moyen pour le vaincre. En éveil comme dans ses songes, il revoyait sans cesse le corps de son adversaire et recherchait un moyen pour le projeter.
Jigoro only weighed about 50 kgs. He always lay at his mercy and found no means of beating him. Whether he was awake or dreaming he forever saw the body of his opponent and sought the means of throwing him down.
Jigoro lut des manuels d'éducation physiques européenne. Il songea aussi aux techniques du sumo, lutte japonaise traditionnelle. Ses études allèrent même jusqu'à la boxe, et à la gymnastique européenne.
Jigoro read European manuals of physical education. He also thought over the technique of sumo, traditional japanese wresling. He even went as far as studying European boxing and gymnastic.
Acharné, Jigoro KANO faisait venir des livres en anglais et poursuivait ses recherches. Un jour, il sourit et, satisfait se tapa sur les genoux en s'écriant : "j'ai trouvé"!
Full of eagerness, Jigoro KANO, had English books sent to him and went on with his research. One day, he smiled and, satisfied, slapping his thighs he cried out : "Found it at last"!
Jigoro, assis dans un coin du dojo, regarda attentivement l'entraînement de Kenkishi FUKUSHIMA, sans rien perdre des mouvements et des attitudes de ce dernier. Son jujitsu fut analysé, classé et étudié à fond.

"I am waiting for you" KANO said. This answer irritated Kenkichi. Wath a shameless remark! It was not in this manner that he had to be approached, he, the strongest pupil of the dojo.
Kenkichi avança de nouveau d'un pas, puis comme un éclair, il fonça sur Jigoro. Ce fut très rapide; Jigoro se baissa, prit d'une main la manche de l'adversaire et de l'autre saisit la cuisse. Le corps de Kenkichi, qui pesait plus de 90kgs, flotta en l'air, touchant à peine les épaules de Jigoro, et , dans un vacarme assourdissant, s'écrasa au sol.
Kenkichi took one step forward, then like a flash of lightning he swooped down on Jigoro. It was very quick; Jigoro bent down, with one hand he took his opponent's sleeve and with the other he seized his thigh. Kenkichi's body, which weighed more than 90 kgs, flew up into the air, hardly touched Jigoro's shouders and in a deafening row, crashed to earth.La chute fut brutale. Kenkichi ressentit une douleur dans le dos. "Je pense l'appeler Kataguruma", répondit Jigoro en souriant, l'air ravi.
The fall was brutal. Kenkichi felt a pain in his back. He gruond bis teeth and sat up slowly on the tatami:"Wath is that movement?" he asked, full of respect for this unknown projection movement which had pinned him to the ground.
"I am thinking of calling it "Kataguruma". Jigoro smillingly replied, quite delighted.
